Why did certain women become activists? What motivated her to act?

When Franklin Delano Roosevelt became sick with polio, Eleanor Roosevelt went from being shy to adventurous.  She learned how to swim, drive a car, and sail a boat so she could teach her kids those skills.  Eleanor Roosevelt also gave speeches, wrote articles, and made guest appearances on the radio to earn money for her family.  By working in the UN she was able to stand up for what she believed strongly in, human rights.
Franklin Roosevelt's affair with Lucy Mercer was another motivation for Eleanor Roosevelt becasue it caused her to become independent and her own person.
Eleanor Roosevelt was also motivated by her own life and what she had experienced.  She saw how hard it was for people during the Great  Depression and the Second World War, and she knew she could help.  Eleanor Roosevelt saw how she was successful in her activism which became a main part of her motivation.
